Sohum or Soham is a mantra, meaning “I am That” in Sanskrit. In Vedic philosophy it means identifying oneself with the universe or ultimate reality.
The practice of sohum meditation will develop your concentration, clarity, and inner stability, by providing a single object as the resting place for your mind’s awareness—the mantra sohum.
Meditated upon repeatedly, I am That, I am That, I am That, I am That, I am That… one can contemplate being a part of everything. It’s like a view of existence from a macrocosmic perspective.
The Natural mantra: The Sohum mantra is a natural mantra because it is already part of your nature. its vibration is already a part of the breath, and everybody breathes.
- Sooooo… is the sound of inhalation, and
- Hummmm… is the sound of exhalation.
Meditation can give you a sense of calm, peace, and balance that can benefit both your emotional well-being and your overall health. You can also use it to relax and cope with stress by refocusing your attention on something calming. Meditation can help you learn to stay centered and keep inner peace.
These benefits don’t end when your meditation session ends. Meditation can help you maintain calmness through your day. When you meditate, you clear away the information overload that builds up every day that contributes to your stress.
Try and feel the ebb and flow of the breath through the inner space of the whole body, while maintaining your focus on the eyebrow center. Sense the vibration of a slow wave of breath. This vibration is the mantra sohum. Hear and feel the sound “so” on the inhale, and the sound “hum” on the exhale.
